He presented the masterclass “Breathing in Performance”, combining lectures and practical workshops on breathing techniques and stretching exercises.

Workshop & Concerts: “The Classical Cretan Lyra in Western European Music”

From February 16 to 25, Yiorgos Kaloudis presented a series of concerts and educational sessions at Dom Radio, exploring the possibilities of the Classical Cretan Lyra. By combining cello techniques with the traditional lyra—and adding a fourth string (low C)—he expanded the instrument’s expressive range.

The programme included:

• Four concerts featuring repertoire from Baroque to contemporary works, including compositions enriched with electronics

• An introductory session (February 16) discussing the history of the Cretan Lyra, demonstrating performance techniques, and presenting the instrument’s technical upgrades

These sessions highlighted the Lyra’s versatility and Kaloudis’ innovative approach to bridging tradition with contemporary classical music.

The lecture explored the history, development, and expressive possibilities of the Classical Cretan Lyra.

Lecture: “The Classical Cretan Lyra in Western European Music”

Yiorgos Kaloudis presented the results of twelve years of research on the four-string Classical Cretan Lyra with sympathetic strings, an updated traditional instrument he developed to perform Western classical repertoire.

The lecture explored:

• The history and sonic qualities of the Classical Cretan Lyra

• Its interpretive possibilities in Western music, from the Medieval period through Renaissance, Baroque, and contemporary works

This work builds on landmark performances, including the world premiere of Bach Cello Suites on the Cretan Lyra at the Athens Concert Hall (2017), the Ancient Theater of Aptera (2017), and a recital at the Necropolis of Orthi Petra, Eleftherna (2018).

Διάλεξη: «Η Κρητική Λύρα στη Δυτικοευρωπαϊκή Μουσική»

Ο Γιώργος Καλούδης παρουσίασε τα αποτελέσματα δωδεκαετούς έρευνας για την τετράχορδη Κλασική Κρητική Λύρα με συμπαθητικές χορδές, μια αναπροσαρμοσμένη παραδοσιακή λύρα που δημιούργησε για την εκτέλεση έργων της Δυτικής κλασικής μουσικής.

Η διάλεξη κάλυψε:

• Την ιστορία και την ηχητική ταυτότητα της Κρητικής Λύρας

• Τις ερμηνευτικές δυνατότητες της σε έργα Δυτικής μουσικής, από τον Μεσαίωνα έως την Αναγέννηση, το Μπαρόκ και τη σύγχρονη εποχή

Η διάλεξη ακολούθησε σημαντικές παρουσιάσεις, όπως η παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα των Σουιτών για σόλο τσέλο του J.S. Bach στην Κρητική Λύρα στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών (2017), το Αρχαίο Θέατρο Απτέρας (2017) και ρεσιτάλ στη Νεκρόπολη της Ορθής Πέτρας, Ελεύθερνα (2018).
